LIBERAL DEMOCRAT YOUTH & STUDENTS |
|
LDYS Liberal Democrat Youth and Students. A word from the Young Liberal Democrats. London is a growing city with one of the youngest populations in Europe and a fast growing and diverse population. Many of our experiences growing up in multi-racial, multimedia Britain are very different from our parents’ and our ideals and views can be radically different too. Yet the usual face of politics is still a middle aged, middle-class Middle Englander and the average age of our MPs and Councillors is well over 50. (Sadly he is right-we badly need more young people to get involved, Susette Palmer, Editor) Liberal Youth is a group within the Lib. Dems representing young people. We campaign for elections with the regular Party but we also spend a lot of time on our own campaigns on issues like bullying, intolerance, drugs and student debt that tend to get ignored by mainstream politicians: many LDYS policies have become official Lib. Dem. Policy once we have drawn attention to them. Young people are interested in politics and want to shape how our country is run in the future but unless you get involved nobody will know.
To join or to find out more go to www.liberalyouth.org Cllr Susette Palmer adds: I am distressed to find that some young people didn’t vote at the last election.. A democracy relies on everyone taking part. I agree that the voting system and parliament needs reforming but that is no reason to opt out. There will be a chance to reform the voting system by referendum in May 2011. |
